Trying to climb Monviso before a massive storm, and getting trapped in a bivvy hut... [CTA ep5]
in 2021, I tried to backpack and climb for 1900km across the Alps. My journey linked trails, scrambles, via ferratas and climbing routes. In total I spent 61 days wild camping and thru hiking from Slovenia to Monaco. I made over 130,000m of ascent, and climbed around 60 additional peaks, many of which were graded mountaineering routes.
In part 5, I make my way through the Vanoise in France via the peak of Pointe de la Sana. I also pass the towns of Modane and Briancon. After that, I attempt to climb Monte Viso. I only had a narrow window of good weather to attempt the climb. This meant racing to towards the mountain before big storms arrived. To finally reach the Mediterranean Sea, I need...

Crossing The Caucasus | hiking across Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan (short film)

In 2018, Richard Hartfield set off alone into Russia's North Caucasus Mountains. His plan was to follow a 1200km backpacking route that he'd made on his phone. It led through tightly-controlled border areas in Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. But this self-shot, solo hiking adventure soon evolved into something else: A celebration of human kindness, set within regions more often perceived as div...

    • @RichardHartfield
      @RichardHartfield 2 месяца назад

      Hey! Thanks very much! I didn’t hike in Svaneti or South Ossetia. I had to take a bus from Vladikavkaz in Russia to Tbilisi, then I hiked north through the Gudumakari mountains, then Khevi, Khevsureti and Tusheti. Then I travelled to Lagodheki and hiked around there before entering Azerbaijan. I didn’t include much footage from Georgia in the film because I didn’t capture as much of that part of the journey. This was because during that time, I was very sad because I had this feeling that I’d failed on my long term project of trying to hike across the entire mountain range. That went out the window when I wasn’t allowed into North Ossetia and was forced to leave Russia early. Sounds a bit spoilt looking back, but my original motivation for making my journey was this idea of walking across the entire mountain range. It turned out to be over-ambitious due to the political situation. But it was worth it in the end, for other reasons… hopefully the film gets this message across! :)

    Hello Richard, first of all, I congratulate you. But the Caucasus is not Russia. My ancestors were exiled from our lands 160 years ago and were subjected to genocide and oppression unprecedented in history. Today, more than 5 million Circassians live in exile, kilometers away from their homeland Circassia and the beautiful mountains of the Caucasus. The Northwest Caucasus has always been Circassia and will continue to be CİRCASSİA. All the mountains you have climbed were once mountains where Circassians rode freely. Now we can watch our lands on RUclips. This is very painful for us. My heart burns with the love of my homeland, which I have never seen. We are devastated that our lands are under Russian occupation

    • @RichardHartfield
      @RichardHartfield 2 месяца назад

      Thank you for sharing your story. I’m really glad that you enjoyed the film. In regards to your comment, I certainly got the impression from lots of people that I met in the North Caucasus that they didn’t consider themselves to be citizens of Russia. But then again, I also met other people who did. It’s clearly a very complex and politically-fraught situation in many areas. Your comment reminds me of other tragic stories that I read about, and heard about first-hand. For instance, entire populations being deported to Central Asia during WW2, under the accusation that these people were supporting the Nazis. Many of these deported people died of starvation, or were finally allowed to return decades later, only to find that their land had since been occupied by other people. The Caucasus has a fascinating but often tragic history. It’s one of the things that inspired me to visit.

    great film! one of the greatest I have seen on youtube. as an Azerbaijani, who studied and worked in Europe for 15 years, I can assure you that bureaucracy in Europe is as disgusting as you have experienced throughout your journey, but the european one takes another form. if you want to do something unconventional (but still perfectly legal) you get to fight the bureaucracy and the apparatus if you are not lucky enough to be born as an EU citizen. My point here is that, regardless which country or state you are in, the main enemy of people who are free in their spirits, and want to explore something interesting - is bureaucracy that create illogical, stupid, useless hurdles that you need to jump over or pass by.

    • @RichardHartfield
      @RichardHartfield 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks very much for the kind words, and for sharing your experiences. I’m also no stranger to the bureaucracy of trying to live and work in Europe as a ‘third nation’ citizen. It can be a massive barrier, and really overwhelming. I guess what can be said about the mountains in Europe though, is that they are generally much more accessible, and the borders are open to cross! The Caucasus is a very different situation. It’s exciting to see the development of mountain tourism there though. Especially with projects like the Transcaucasian Trail.

    Another great video. You went through some of my favorite areas of the Western Alps. If I may just give you a little, unsolicited piece of advice: be careful with abandoning trails or attempting to make your own route when climbing mountains. The Petite Aguille du Glacier climb was breathtaking, but I wonder if you are aware of the dangers of venturing onto ridges where you have never been before and where no-one is likely to find you, if you get lost / hurt. The higher reaches of the Val Very have no phone coverage, and if you suddenly have a problem, there won't be help coming. Also consider deteriorating visibility conditions (clouds, fog), or adverse weather (high winds). If you get caught by them while on such a ridge, you are trapped. I'm just giving you my honest advice as a fellow mountain enthusiast who grew up in the Alps: don't get yourself in situations from which there might be no easy way out. Thanks again for your videos!

    • @RichardHartfield
      @RichardHartfield 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the videos! Climbing is inherently risky, and involves going to places which you haven’t been before. It’s all a question of personal risk tolerance. I’m happy with the decisions that I made on the day, and the actions that I took to mitigate the perceived risks. The climbing was well within my ability, the weather was perfect, I sought advice from climbers and staff at the nearby hut, and I informed them of my plans. I also carried an emergency GPS locator beacon, and constantly re-assessed the route during climb. For me, that was enough, and it was very fun! Cheers!

    Well done Richard, a wonderful achievement and journey, the last video was well worth waiting for. Back to the grind now or have you another adventure up your sleeve, that's if you haven't already started one. !!! A big congratulations , brilliant.

    Hey Richard! How nice it is to see you in my region, Piedmont. I was born and raised among those mountains and, of course, I climbed Monviso, which is the most iconic of all. If you'd like some suggestions about more hikes or where to go feel free to ask. In particular, check out peaks such as Argentera, Gelas and Marguareis. You will end up in beautiful places well far form the beaten path.

      Thanks! I’ll definitely be back at some point. I managed to climb the Argentera but I couldn’t climb Gelas because I’d have needed an extra day :(
